Multiple computer problems-HELP

Hopefully someone can help me out.
I am running Windows XP-Service Pack 2

I have an ATI Radeon9600 XT video card that I can't enable because it keeps trying to reset itself and
eventually locks up the whole system or just reboots the system.

I have a Sound Blaster Live audio card that is no longer working.

I can't seem to get updates to most items on my computer, including Microsoft Updates. I receive the following error:

Microsoft Update Error:

In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the Security tab, click the Internet security zone icon, and then click Custom Level.
In the Settings dialog box, scroll to the Miscellaneous section.
Under Userdata persistence , select Enable.
Click OK and when the security warning dialog box appears, click Yes.

Read more about steps you can take to resolve this problem yourself.

I checked my internet options and they are as stated above but I still get this message.

Several of the suggested update steps in the Yuckware removal thread could not be completed because I received an error that said I could not connect to the server.

My Norton Firewall and Norton Antivirus are no longer working due to an Integrator Error.

I did go out to the Symantec Site and ran a virus scan to make absolutely sure I got a scan with all of the latest updates. The scan was clean.

Here are my two Hijack Logs:

Hi, aileen, and welcome to A2K. You seem to have a bunch of irritation and inconvenience going on there, for sure. I don't notice any recognized yuckware signatures in any of your logs; that sorta may be bad news - I doubt an active yuckware issue is at the seat of your problems. However, in the interest of trying to help, I can offer some "off-the-top-of-my-head" suggestions, but don't do any of this before reading, understanding, and carefully considering the pros and cons of all of it, please!

From what you report, I kinda suspect some (though likely not all) of your difficulties may be traced to a corrupted installation of your Norton/Symantec software. Symantec provides guides for Removing and Reinstalling their applications.

I note also that you have a number of other Security/Privacy and/or System Maintenance applications installed, including WinPatrol, Spybot S&D, Microsoft Antispyware, and FixIt Utilities; its possible an unwillingness to play well together may be at work here, too. It could be helpful to uninstall each of them (and all their components) as well, wherever possible "undoing" (per the relevant app's documentation) any "fixes" you may have effected through each app, prior to reinstalling your Norton/Symantec applications, re-installing them one-at-a-time following getting Norton to work the way it should. A runthrough of FixIt Utilities' "FixUp", "RegistryFixer", and "Registry Cleanup" features might help some as a first step, before removing/reinstalling FixIt and the others; though I have my doubts, its worth a shot. If your Norton suite includes Norton SystemWorks, you could see what its fix wizards can do for you, and Spybot S&D has a System Internals scan-and-repair feature found in its "Advanced" mode under "Tools". Naturally, consult the documentation for any of those before employing them. Again, I have my doubts, but since those apps are available to you, its worth a shot.

A "This just might help" first step you could try would be to disconnect from the internet (if necessary, physically unplug your phone line or disconnect the cable from your machine to your broadband interface), Perform a Clean Boot then go to Start>Run, and type (or copy-and-paste), without the quotes, "sfc /scannow" (note the space between sfc and scannow, and note the forward slash (/) beginning the textstring /scannow, as well as the 2 ns in /scannow) and click "OK" - you may be prompted for your Windows install disc, so have it (or any other XP install disc - doesn't hafta be yours - any actual Windows XP install disc, not a vendor's "Restore" disc) handy. When the process has completed, reconfigure for normal boot, reboot, and see what's up. While this may not help, it might, so its worth a shot. After running sfc /scannow, you likely will have to repeat any updates you've recently installed, btw.

There also is the possibility of actual hardware issues - the cards giving you problems might be faulty; it happens. To narrow that down some, go to the respective vendor's websites and download all the latest software and drivers for your particular hardware and operating system configuration (if they are .zip or other compressed files, extract them to easy-to-find folders), don't install them yet, then uninstall any related software which appears in "Add/Remove Programs", then uninstall the the devices themselves via the "Hardware" tab under the System Properties Control Panel (accessed by right-clicking "My Computer" on your desktop and selecting "Properties"). Then shut down your machine - actually power it off, don't just restart it. When it has shut down, open it up, and observing static control procedure (have the machine sitting on a bare desktop or other work surface, not a carpeted or padded surface other than a purpose-designed, properly configured anti-static mat if you have one - plugged in to a properly grounded outlet, but turned off, touch the machine's chassis before touching anything else inside the machine), locate and unseat, fully remove, then reseat the suspect cards, then close up the machine, power it on, and when it detects the hardware, don't allow "Automatic search", but point the "Install new hardware" wizard to the appropriate folder containing the newly downloaded drivers.

All that said, depending on your comfort level when it comes to fiddling with hardware and software, or if you run through the foregoing without satisfactory result, you perhaps best might be advised to haul that machine into a competent, trustworthy repair shop.

Hi timber landko, Thanks for the welcome and thanks for the advice. I have my work cut out for me. I too was suspicious of conflicting software. I already downloaded a program from Norton to uninstall all of that program and try re-downloading it from their site.

I will unload the other fix-it programs as suggested and try to get the Norton working. Good plan.

I also plan to open the computer and reseat the audio and video cards. The video card I installed myself in March and it was working fine until this past week. Now the audio card as well. Wondering if the audio and video card just don't want to play together all of a sudden.

I will get started with the uninstall and let you know how it goes.

Thanks so much for the response.
