Football uniform mystery

Well, I am no football connoisseur. In fact, I know didley squat about American Football. But one part of football always fascinated me. Or should I say, one part of football players? .... Anyway. The mystery I need to solve has to do with the uniforms those nice young men wear.

http://www.igo4uf.com/images/photos/2001/Orange%20Bowl%20vs%20Maryland%202002/Todd%20Johnson%20about%20to%20make%20the%20tackle.jpg

Obviously these folks are muscular. And it's clear they wear shoulder pads and thigh pads. Everybody who has an ounce of common sense wears also a cup to protect their progeny regions.... But... Or rather,... butt! Are those padded? You know, the rear of the football player. Or is that the real thing? I have studied the issue during one whole Superbowl in detail (quite a commitment, really, since I know nothing about the game), but I was not able to resolve this pressing issue. Please help. Thank you.

If I recall correctly, the gluteus maximus is unpadded except for a small protective piece covering the coccyx.

It's pretty much just the natural form you see.

Weeelll, not all big butts are equal. But if you present me with a bundle of pure muscles, there are chances I will respond positively. If you present me with, say, Luciano Pavarotti's bare behind, I would most likely decline to get anywhere in the vicinity of it.

No, not really.

But thanks anyway.

I much prefer the female form.

And no, I do not want to see the posterior of Beverly Sills.

Maria Callas perhaps.
