So many evocative songs posted here! During a very, very low period about 20 years ago, I actually made a mix tape of songs I thought might have been appropriate. The cassette's long since been lost (or possibly destroyed), but a few of the titles I remember off-hand:
1. "Hello Again", the Cars;
2. "If You're Ever in Oklahoma", J.J. Cale;
3. "Get Closer", Linda Ronstadt;
4. "Once In A Lifetime", the Talking Heads;
5. "Hey Jude", the Beatles;
6. "Every Grain of Sand", Bob Dylan;
7. "Honky Tonk Woman", the Rolling Stones;
8. "Do You Feel Like I Do", Peter Frampton (live version);
9. "Im Sticking With You", the Velvet Underground;
10. "Something So Right", Paul Simon;
11. "Sail Away", Neil Young;
12. "Down By The Seaside", Led Zeppelin;
13. "And The Wind Cries Mary", Jimi Hendrix; and
14. "Wonderful Remark", Van Morrison.
Finally, I want my tombstone to read, "I TOLD you I was sick!"
IT'S SO HARD TO SAY GOODBYE TO YESTERDAY - BOYZ TO MEN....
How do I say goodbye to what we had?
The good times that made us laugh
Outweigh the bad.
I thought we'd get to see forever
But forever's gone away
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.
I don't know where this road
Is going to lead
All I know is where we've been
And what we've been through.
If we get to see tomorrow
I hope it's worth all the wait
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.
And I'll take with me the memories
To be my sunshine after the rain
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.
And I'll take with me the memories
To be my sunshine after the rain
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

I want "Calling All Angels" to be played at my funeral.
I want "God Will Take Care of You" to be played at my funeral.
Callas singing Gluck's J'ai perdu mon Eurydice Act IV 1961 (as it says on the list) - it always stops me in my tracks..
that's it for now; my stones' favorite was already taken for a movie funeral scene...
I went to the Chelsea drugstore...

Was that it? I was remembering Sympathy for the Devil... but there were two movies: the one with Glenn Close, the name of which I can never remember, and the early one, Return of the Secaucus Seven. Seems to me the second was taken from the first, but if not, at least a strong similarity was apparent.
I've never seen the Secaucus Seven. I'll have to check it out.
Yes, I immediately thought of The Big Chill. (You Can't Always Get What You Want...)
I like Sympathy for the Devil much more.
From that to Callas. Well, not so fast, I like much in between, though I am lame on recent stuff.
Willie Bobo... well, I diverted to latin jazz for a while.
I am a dummy re the intricacy and elegance of music. Am purely reactive.
Such a variety of fascinating choices - from a variety of fascinating people.
Anybody like Jackson Browne's "Sisters of the Sun"?
anything by Townes Van Zant
If it's all the same, I'd rather not have one (funeral). However, in the event they need to bury me, I suppose it would be all right to play Fats Dominoe's "I Want to Walk You Home."
Rassan Roland Kirk's version of "The Old Rugged Cross," recorded 1971, replete with voice-over commentary, blasting the (then) current administration.
