Green Day - Good Riddance

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road.
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go.
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why.
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time.

It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind.
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time.
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial.
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while.

It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

Ella, scatting and singing

There are many many crazy things
That will keep me loving you
And with your permission
May I list a few

The way you wear your hat
The way you sip your tea
The memory of all that
No they can't take that away from me

The way your smile just beams
The way you sing off key
The way you haunt my dreams
No they can't take that away from me

We may never never meet again, on that bumpy road to love
Still I'll always, always keep the memory of

The way you hold your knife
The way we danced till three
The way you changed my life
No they can't take that away from me

Ok - another one for real. When that coffin (cardboard, save the money for serious drinking after the event) hits the fires I want them to be hearing this....

Into the Mystic (Van Morrison)

We were born before the wind
Also younger than the sun
Ere the bonnie boat was won as we sailed into the mystic
Hark, now hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic

And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home
And when the fog horn blows I want to hear it
I don't have to fear it

And I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And magnificently we will flow into the mystic

When that fog horn blows you know I will be coming home
And when that fog horn whistle blows I got to hear it
I don't have to fear it

And I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And together we will flow into the mystic

I never really gave it a lot of thought since I wish to be cremated and to have the cremains strewn over Siberia. I don't particularly want a funeral service...seems rather a waste of time and money especially since the guest of honor is not there (at least physically).

If pushed to the outer limits, maybe the theme music from The Rockford Files. A serious contender would have to be Tall Pines by Damon Black, maybe get James King and his band to perform it live.

Tall Pines

Once in my youth, I stood on this mountain
And planted some pines in the sand
Every day I looked their way
But just couldn't understand

Why they never grew like I thought they should do
I just couldn't understand why
Now I've rambled around this wide world through
And today I just happened by

Tall pines, tall pines
Reaching up for the sky
Tall pines, tall pines
I bet you wouldn't know me now.

I'll never forget the morning I left
The hum of the bees in the hay
The farther I walk, the harder they talk
How silent it seems here today

There's that old rail fence, I built with spikes
Surrounding some old family graves
And there's one gravestone standing all alone
Awaiting to join me in the shade.

Tall pines, tall pines
Reaching up for the clouds
Tall pines, tall pines
I bet you wouldn't know me now
I've come home to sleep beneath your boughs.

Tom Waits / You're innocent when you dream
Billie Holiday / Pennies from heaven
Bulat Okudžava / Polnočnyj trollejbus
Iva Bittová & Pavel Fajt / anything from their 1987 Bittová & Fajt LP (perhaps that dreamy song with the alarm-clock sounds)
Paul Simon / Graceland
Billy Bragg & Wilco / California stars
Henry Hall & his Orchestra / It's time to say goodnight
Solomon Burke / Diamond in your mind
Nightmares on Wax / You're not alone

No its not that I want a really long service, its just I cant choose. And the, you know, berieved got to have something to choose from too...

I've been singing "Fields of Gold" to my old dog Kodi lately who hasn't much time left with me, so I think I will go with that one, because it fits well the loss and of living on only in the memories of others.

"Fields Of Gold"

You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in the fields of gold

So she took her love
For to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold

Will you stay with me, will you be my love
Among the fields of barley
We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in the fields of gold

See the west wind move like a lover so
Upon the fields of barley
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth
Among the fields of gold
I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left
We'll walk in the fields of gold
We'll walk in the fields of gold

Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold
You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in the fields of gold
When we walked in the fields of gold
When we walked in the fields of gold

I think I'll go with "And She Was" by the Talking Heads:

And she was lying in the grass
And she could hear the highway breathing
And she could see a nearby factory
She's making sure she is not dreaming
See the lights of a neighbor's house
Now she's starting to rise
Take a minute to concentrate
And she opens up her eyes

The world was moving and she was right there with it (and she was)
The world was moving she was floating above it (and she was) and she was

And she was drifting through the backyard
And she was taking off her dress
And she was moving very slowly
Rising up above the earth
Moving into the universe
Drifting this way and that
Not touching ground at all
Up above the yard

Chorus

She was glad about it... no doubt about it
She isn't sure where she's gone
No time to think about what to tell them
No time to think about what she's done
And she was

And she was looking at herself
And things were looking like a movie
She had a pleasant elevation
She's moving out in all directions

Chorus

Joining the world of missing persons (and she was)
Missing enough to feel alright (and she was)
