Men believe they can live morally free lives by attempting to live by The Ten Commandments given to the Prophet Moses on Mount Sinai by God when He, spoke out of a thick cloud and engraved the Ten Commandments by the Word of His power, in stone to give to the children of Israel camped before Mt. Sinai. A people who, even after being freed from the bondage of Egypt, believe they were separated from God. The Ten Commandments were given to Israel as a standard bearer for righteous thinking. They were temporary laws for Israel to adjust from the mentality of being Egyptian slaves to the freedom of God's Grace as their sufficiency. Had the Children been obedient and lived by the directives of God's grace and mercy, they would have kept God's covenant and became “a peculiar treasure unto God above all people, for all the earth is mine, and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation” (Exodus 19). Nonetheless, they were disobedient and moved further away from their salvation in doubt.

@jufa,
The 10 Commandments appeared in the Egyptian Book of the Dead long before the event with Moses is said to have occured.
