Are we all someday humbled by this "God"?

Lets get morbid...

What does death mean to you and why is it part of our world?

Why is it part of our world? Well, for one thing, without death right now we'd have roughly umpteen-zillion people inhabiting this planet. That's just a rough estimate, of course.

seems to me that the food chain requires it. if carnivores never died, they would eat all the available prey and then perish from starvation. likewise, if herbivores never died, they would consume all the vegetation and then perish. the only lifeforms left would be inedible plants and such, and we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I don't know if I'll ever understand death. It just is.

Why is it a part of this world? I don't have a frickin' clue! Razz
I only know that it is.

When I was little, I used to dream of being immortal, and I even had a belief that I was a God! Death only happened to kittens and cows. Then, as I got older, ok, I'm gonna have to die someday and it could be now, I decided:
I won't worry about it.
Even if I could be immortal, that would kind of suck.
I kinda like our lot as perishables.

Do a google search on What is death or conversely, what is life. Maybe even marry the two together in a search.

My personal take is that I am here as a gift from God and I have been given a set amount of time to enjoy and experience the things which are here and going on around me. This includes the sad joy of experiencing pain and grief. after all are not pain and grief also gifts since they allow me to better enjoy happy moments such as love and even solitude?

As to the idea of being humbled by God at the time when I am called away from my earthly existence, the main humbling will be if I was a bad person. An intentionally evil person and yes, I will alas also be set in place for having not given my all every day. I will be (I believe) called to task for my many failures and inadequacies. Times when I could have helped another; but, chose instead to invest in my own selfishness...that is something which I feel God will be none to pleased about.

We are all who we are and we all have our beliefs and there are those who do not believe in full death. I am in that group. Yes, my body will die but my soul will live on, either in a collective of souls or as a separate entity in a new body.

These are parts of my beliefs and in no way reflect what others may think or believe so do not get the idea that I am convinced I have it all 100% right. If anything I get the feeling there are many different correct ways to live life, including as an atheist or an agnostic. Perhaps we all are right and at the same time we are all wrong...in other words I'll find out when I die.

that's remarkably tolerant, for a2k if not for the world at large. can you elaborate or speculate as to what makes you feel that way? methinks it wouldn't be the worst possible outcome if your attitude became more widespread.

The essence of my belief is that I have a way of life which is following one God. There are others who have good lives, productive existences, who either doubt that there is a God or deny God exists at all. Am I somehow better than they are? Are they better than I am? If a person travels along a different spiritual route from me, does that mean they go to a better place or a worser place after time on Earth?

My belief is that we are all here for a reason and that we are to do our best and live as decent a life as possible. To expound upon it further, we may come from several different spiritual universes and that to me would give each of us a different core of beliefs. I am not good at explaining all of this, and that is unfortunate. My belief is that if we lead good decent lives we are all on equal ground no matter what our belief in a divine power or after life may be.

Is the Buddhist somehow less likely to receive grace at death than the Bible thumping Church going Christian or the caring and concerned Jewish man? Is the atheist somehow going to a better eternity than the Jesuit Priest? As I said, much of this will be determined at the time of my death and although it grieves me to say this, the chances are I will not be able to come back and post here to let you know what happens.

And why would it be so bad if tolerance became more widespread?

(Note: I must leave for now but will be back later so post away and I will respond as soon as I can.)

thank you Sturgis, you explained your position well as far as i'm concerned. by comparison, i didn't state mine too clearly, using a sort of double negative. what i meant was the world would be better off if tolerance was more widespread.

incidentally, you ride a motorcycle by any chance? your member name suggests that possibility.

Sturgis, you are a Varmint right after my own heart. (That's what they call people who live in Vermont, isn't it? Varmints? Smile)

With the entire universe there is not enough room for life without death yet we are imprisoned on this tiny rock and ravaged by the God of Death...

Why would you choose a life without death, Rex? In time, it would get pretty boring, I think. You sound depressed, btw.

Nope, no motorcycle... just a simple bicycle, I do not operate motorized vehicles (be glad, be very glad).

As to the name, my folks met in Sturgis...the one in Michigan... and then the doctor who delivered me was named Sturgis, so they figured it must be a sign and slapped me with the name.
