I found a copy of OSX Tiger at a store for only $88. I'd really like to buy it, except under requirements, it says I need 256MB of memory, and I think I only have 128MB. If I got Tiger, would it lag on my computer, or would the installer detect that I don't have the necessary memory and abort the install program instead?
It prolly will install, but it very well may not run satisfactorily.
Your MAC will tell you immediately that you're lacking
the necessary memory. What OS do you have now?
Jaguar 10.2.8. I was told it was very much worth it to get Tiger.
jp talks here about Tiger

I still have Panther and feel no need to upgrade (yet).
What kind of computer are you trying to run it on?
Imac, G3, G4, G5, ibook, etc.? And what are the specs?
If you go under the apple menu, choose "about this mac" and then click on the "More info" button to see all of your system specs.
I know, I know. It's a G3 iBook with 128MB RAM and has a cd writer on it. And as mentioned before, I'm running 10.2.8.
If you are looking for increased performance, upgrading the hardware would be the optimal solution.
That being said, Tiger is a major upgrade from 10.2., but still has quite a few bugs in the system which might bog down your system. You might want to consider trying 10.3 (codename: Panther). You will get many of the same upgrades that you would get with Tiger but without the bugs.
Oh, well thanks. Do they still sell it?
I just checked ebay and there are quite a few people selling 10.3 there. Some require a dvd drive, though.
