Anita has died. She is known to most as anti gay crusader. I am not on her side in this. But I believe in separating the art from the artist. Before she became notorious I liked her records. At age 19 or so I saw her in concert at the San Antonio Rodeo. It was split billing with Rex Allen (and his wonder horse Koko). RIP
@edgarblythe,
Strangely, I remember the name, but nothing else.
@roger,
You might have heard her record "Paper Roses."
I recall her all too well. Besides being a virulent anti-gay, she was a Christian fundamentalist. Sorry but I can’t separate her misdeeds and spouting off.
Being unable to separate the artist from the art can eventually leave one with no art at all.
@edgarblythe,
Respectfully, I disagree. As a religious person, she showed little love in her heart for others who disagreed with her POV. In fact, she went out of her way to evangelize. She is an exception to my belief that one should separate art from artist. For example, Sinatra was one of the finest singers ever, but had quite a dark side . As did Jerry Lewis. These artists I give a ‘hall pass’ to.
@Ragman,
I respect your right to that opinion.
@edgarblythe,
Wasn't she a sponsor for orange juice?
@glitterbag,
Yes. I had forgotten until you mentioned it.
Bill Ward, who used to participate here I think as Occam Bill, posted a long statement on Facebook today. This part of it seems appropriate to this thread.
"That's about the time I got into law, where everything is a shade of gray and extreme statements of every kind come to die. The nicest man in the world can still be a complete douchebag when he's served with divorce papers. Peaceful, dedicated, loving parents who'd walk thru fire in lockstep to protect their children will burn them alive to hurt each other in a custody battle. That fellow who stabbed his roomate 56 times in his sleep, never broke a law before, or a prison rule since. That brave fellow who served and died for his country a hero raped a girl highschool...
In criminal law, you can't avoid meeting genuinely decent people, who did something horrific. The thing is; while you have no personal obligation to presume innocence; you frequently do not know what the truth is, and likely never will. Day One would not have occurred absent a stated agreement that I will NEVER defend a child molester. 🙄 How the **** would I know if dude's the moster he's accused of being, or the victim of an accusation that will follow him to his grave even if he proves he could prove his innocence?
You just can't maintain cartoonish beliefs in the "Good people" vs "Bad people" dichotomy. I would posit those people do exist, but as bookends. The rest of us are on the spectrum, somewhere between Jimmy Carter and _____ (this space inrentially left blank to avoid distraction.)"
