It's going to take a lot to push vets from the Republican Party. Post Vietnam, the military was treated like crap and paid accordingly. Under Carter, a young enlisted man with a family would need food stamps to close his budget. When Reagan was elected, one of the first things he did was
dramatically increase military pay. It wasn't what you could get on the outside, but I can tell you from first hand experience, that a lot of military families (young boomers who are now Republican diehards) have a very clear memory of who showed them some respect. Trump has shown complete disdain for the military, but the way the Democratic Party abandoned the military in the 70's just isn't forgotten.
