a student's las summer.

this afternoon
summer was in the air
I could feel the
unmistakable warmth
of a six pm tarmac
that's been baking all day

spring has come early
the jasmine blooms
two months two soon
the air's perfumed
by August

And all I can think of
in all this warmth
is how I'll never
be twenty again
in November I'll be 21

My last varsity lecture
slid away in a sweaty
hall and now
I'll be a real person
bills and taxes

The Honeysuckle climbs up
the wall outside my window
sweet heady fragrance
in the cool highveld night
everythings doing it's own
thing regardless of my wish
to remain twenty forever.

*I live in the Southern Hemisphere remember

Hey, Tagged_lyricist

nostalgic descriptions -
I could smell the tarmac!

Sounds like you live in a beautiful part of the world.

As for being 21 soon...bills and taxes...hmmm
I understand your dread.

But 21 can bring others things too, such as freedom to make your own choices.
Hope you choose to go on writing.

all the best,
Endy
