csrss.exe error message

Reply Tue 23 Aug, 2005 02:06 pm
Friends: I am running Windows XP Pro and am getting the following message every time I boot up: "csrss.exe application cannot be run in Win32 mode." I run McAffe and AVG antivirus every day, also I ran Ad-Aware and Spybot but it's still there. Any suggestions how I can fix this? Thanks a lot.

Frequently, that error message results from a missing/renamed/corrupted notepad.exe. Typically, if notepad.exe has been renamed, it will have been named "notepad.exe.bak" or less often something like "!notepad.exe" - rendering the executable invalid. The legitimate notepad.exe file should be found in your \system32 foloder, look there first. If the file is found to have been renamed, just rename it to its default "notepad.exe", reboot, and see what happens. If it is missing, or if it is there and has not been renamed, replace it; a valid notepad.exe may be downloded HERE. Download it to your \system32 folder, confirm you wish to overwrite the existing file if prompted, then reboot and see what happens.

timberlandko: Thanks for your response. I searched for the variants of Notepad as suggested by you, and also the System32 folder, but nothing unusual was found. Any other suggestions I may try? Thanks.

Bummer that didn't seem to help. Sorry. Well, here's about all I can think of at the moment:

Open your \system32 folder, find notepad.exe (usually at %SystemRoot%\system32\notepad.exe, where "%System Root%" is a variable refering to your root drive, the drive on which Windows is installed) right-click on it, select "Properties". On the "General" tab, "Size" should be reported as 67.5 KB, and "Created" should be reported as "Thursday, August 23, 2001, 7:00:00:00 AM". "Modified" will report a much more recent date, which, if all is as it should be, will be the date notepad.exe last was updated via Windows Update. On the "Version" tab, highlight each of the entries in the left panel to verify what you have there is the original Microsoft file; the "File Version", if your Windows Updates are current, should be reported as "5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)", "Product Version" should be reported as "5.1.2600.2180"). If that all seems to be as should be, you might try System File Checker -

Start>Run, type (without the quotes) "cmd", and click "OK". A black-and-white Command Prompt box will open - at the blinking cursor, type (without the quotes) "sfc /scannow", observing there is a space between "sfc" and "/scannow", and make sure to type the 2 "n"s in "scannow", then hit "Enter". You probably will be prompted for your Win XP install disk - have one, any actual Win XP install disk, handy; a vendor's "Restore" disk probably won't work without a buncha fiddling around.

If none of that helps, see what your Event Log has to say. Go to Start>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer. Look under Applications and under System for errors or warnings, to see if anything there obviously relates to your problem.

As a last resort, you could try System Restore; Start>Run, type (without the quotes) "msconfig", click "OK", select "Launch System Restore", select "Restore My Computer to an Earlier Time", click ""Next", and follow the prompts to roll your system back to a configuration prior to the onset of the problem. If you do that, check for, and reapply as necessary, any updates you may have installed between the time of the selected restore point and the present.

Lemme know how you get along.

Dear timberlandko: Thanks again. I did as suggested and found in "Event Viewer" many "error" and "warning"references in "System" to "DCOM" and "W32Time". Are these significant? I have no idea what these references mean. Thanks.

I strongly doubt either DCOM or W32Time have anything to do with the symptoms you're reporting. Have you tried using System Restore to revert your machine to a point prior to the onset of the problem?

Timberlandko: I found out that my System Restore was turned off, so I could not restore to any good know restore point. Could I post a HijackThis log for you to have a look? Thanks again.

Sure, put up a log, and I'll look it over - dunno if that'll help much, but its worth a shot.

Apart from the problem that brought you here, you are seriously in need of updates, and there is a buncha yuckware on your machine, among which are some newer, particularly nasty critters. I suggest you go HERE and get busy.

timberlandko: I am trying to download the Microsoft Windows SP1a upgrade but am always being aborted, being told:"... the product key used to install windows may not be valid...". I bought my computer with Windows already installed, so I am stuck here. Any ideas how I can get around this?
Thanks.

That might be a real problem. If your computer in fact has a legitimate copy of Windows - if it came new from a name vendor with XP installed or if its small-business builder installed a legitimate copy at time of build - it prolly is fine, and the issue can be easily resolved via contact with either your machine's vendor or Microsoft (you may need some sort of proof-of-purchase). If the foregoing is not the case, about your only option is to purchase and install a legitimate copy of Windows.

I dunno if this will help, but you might try ordering the SP1a disc, available at no charge from Microsoft; it may or may not install OK on your machine, though it very likely will want to see a Windows XP install disc. It is possible the product key for your Windows installation is among those on a "Hot list" of known pirated codes - if so, you're pretty much screwed.

This may seem awful one-way of me, but I'm sorta big on legitimate, licensed software. I extend to you my concern, understanding, and sympathy, along with my sincerest hope you can resolve that problem satisfactorilly, but that's it, and I hope you understand.

Again, I really hope you can sort that validation issue out, and I'm ready to go to work for you when and if you do.

Please post the entire HJT log. Also, if you saved the EWIDO logs, as directed, I'd like to see those as well.

On the bright side, the incomplete HJT log you just posted shows considerable improvement over your first log.
