Goodness, I feel weird when I post way over here, because, being a registered Luddite, I feel my computer ought to know how to take care of itself.....but...

I am getting a bit low on memory, and I remember I once got a trial program for cleaning up all the dead, partly deleted things and the rubbish and generally smartening the place up.

Does anyone know of a reasonable free program for this - or, if there is none - a good and reasonably priced one?

Thankee all very kindly....scuttles back to familiar territory....

You don't need any program other than windows to do this.

But when you say low on memory do you mean your harddrive? You are not talking RAM right?

ooooooh nooooooooo! SealPoet, you cruel man you! Don't you know that Luddites don't know "the thing" about magnets?

Actually, I was wondering why the bunny wasn't just using the defrag and the disk clean-up to solve her maintenance issues. And, regularly think about going thru and looking at what files are HUGE and find a way to reduce them by chucking out "stuff". Hint: photos and graphics take up a LOT of room. Another hint: Take some things off your hard drive and save to floppy disk or CD. And back-em-up, too!

I defrag and such - I thought there was a whole lot of crap that sort of hung about anyway? When I used the sample program, it cleared a lot of space.

I know about magnets!

I don't know diff beween RAM and hard-drive, though.

Yes. Thank you!!!

Er...I really don't think there is room for a RAM in there with all the hamsters! Unless it is from Lilliput.....?

Easy peasy BunnyHun:

1. fire up your PC
2. type in <FORMAT C:>

There's no need to backup or anything like that - in fact take all your old, unneccessary disks, etc and just chuck them out.

Deb, the topic for this week's Langalist (a well-respected newsletter) is Back-ups and part of the information is a re-cap of getting rid of junk in your system! Here is the link to the page of information I think you will want:

Langalist Back-ups (and Cleaning out Stuff)

Has some freebie program links and lots of other good info.

PS. I am glad you are a 'wary bunny', lol!

Deb,

I will try to write up some instructions later but here is the simple version:

Empty your trash.

Empty your browser cache and cookies. Also delete any other plugins and offline content.

Uninstall uneeded programs.

There are a few more steps that I won't go into without better instructions ready.
