CD Drive doesn't recognize cd's

Hellow everyone I just wanted to find out why it was that my cd drives can't seem to read ANY cd I put in there. Honestly I haven't used this computer in a while and am not sure what could be the problem. I've uninstalled the hardware, reinstalled updated drivers. Yet nothing seems to work, anyone can help me would be greatly appreciated.

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

This is what I see under the properties tab in device manager.

Sorry I didn't notice this one before. It oughtta be pretty easy to deal with. The "Code 41"/"Won't recognize optical media" problem most often stems from a Registry hiccup caused by CD burning software - its not an uncommon glitch. The generally-successful fix is a simple registry edit.

When doing anything with your registry, back up any key or keys you intend to change before taking any other action. Improperly messing around with your Registry can cripple your machine - fuss with the registry carefully, with attention to detail, and at your own risk. See How to back up, edit, and restore the registry in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

Just back up the specific key or keys you intend to change before you change it; backing up the entire Registry or entire Hives is tricky with XP. As opposed to deleting values, which is pretty much a one-way street, it can be a good idea to rename them, allowing easier recovery if the result is not what was intended. See Safekeeping the Windows Registry.

It is also a good idea to set a pre-edit Restore Point prior to doing any Registry editing. Go to Start>Run, type (without the quotes) "msconfig", and click "OK". Select "Launch System Restore", then select "Create a restore point", and follow the prompts.

Now, lets see if we can fix your problem.

Start Registry Editor by going to Start>Run, then in the dialog box type (without the quotes) "Regedt32.exe", then click "OK" - typing (without the quotes) "regedit" will work, too. Note the difference between the spelling of the 2)

Locate the UpperFilters value under the following Registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

From the "Edit" menu, click "Delete" then click "OK". Alternately, rename as described above.

Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the Registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

From the "Edit" menu, click "Delete", or alternately rename, then click "OK".

Close Registry Editor and reboot your machine.

NOTE: After you remove or rename the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values, you may notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software. If so, you should uninstall/reinstall the affected software. In fact, its a good idea to uninstall your burning app first, before performing the Registry edit, then when the Registry edit has been completed, reinstall it - with the vendor's latest updates and patches - following the registry edit.
