I knew he'd written a lot but I never realised how many significant tunes were his until the obituary came out.
What surprised me is that none of the major songs , Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head, or the Look of Love are playing, none of that, it's a song I didn't even realise he'd written until the other day.
24 hours from Tulsa, keeps playing, not the whole song mind you, just the first couple of bars on a loop, and it's starting to piss off everyone else in the house.
The Stylistics - You'll Never Get To Heaven (If You Break My Heart)
"You'll Never Get to Heaven (If You Break My Heart)"
is a song composed by Burt Bacharach, with lyrics by Hal David. It was
originally recorded by Dionne Warwick in 1964, who charted at number 34 in
the US Billboard Hot 100 with her version. It was covered by the Stylistics in
1973, who reached number 23 in the US with their cover.
"What the World Needs Now Is Love"
is a 1965 popular song with lyrics by Hal David and music composed by Burt
Bacharach. First recorded and made popular by Jackie DeShannon, it was
released on April 15, 1965, on the Imperial label after a release on sister label
Liberty records the previous month was canceled. It peaked at number seven
on the US Hot 100 in July of that year. In Canada, the song reached number one.
His songs will be going strong in a hundred years time, they really are timeless.
I really like The Stranglers' version of Walk on By the lyrics are really spat out threateningly and the throbbing bass guitar gives a real sense of menace. So different from the original.

This version of I'll Never Fall in Love Again wasn't popular here in the US. Unlike the Dionne Warwick version, it's not a poppy confection. It's downbeat, and it includes a harsh final verse that Dionne doesn't sing. Bobbie Gentry is better known here for Ode to Billy Joe.
On the BBC report they said a whole generation had been introduced to Bacharach's music by the Austin Powers films.
I've not seen either film so I'm just going on what they said.
Apparently Mike Myers was driving home one day when The Look of Love came on the radio. That got Myers thinking about what happened to the 60s swingers and Powers was born.
I believe Bacharach himself is in one of the films and one of his songs is being played in the other one.

@jespah,
I lost track of Bobby Gentry after "Ode to Billy Joe', but I did favor Dionne Warwick 'I'll never Fall In Love Again', so lets take a minute to think...I loved What the World Needs Now Is Love" ..it wasn't a dance toon but it was great in the car....We only listened to music and studied.
another favorite was The Look of Love

The interview with Elvis Costello about the recordings with Bacharach was fascinating - with what it revealed about both of these two. I believe that I heard it on NPR radio a few days ago.

Furthermore, I was a bit shocked to learn that they recorded for nearly 30 years having started in 1989 as they worked at the same recording studio.
