I made you a cake for your birthday
as the moon waxed and lit August skies
You knew I could not have forgotten
As the stars in their heaven drifted by.
You were born on the night of a star shower
Liquid light rained on earth from on high
Like a luminous, bright streaming river
Silver beams greeted your first strong cry.
And I knew you before my arms held you
And you knew me when I said your name.
From the moment you fought your way outward
Our hearts knew-we were one and the same.
Eyes as green as the sea that life came from
Hair as black as the seaweed that coils
A vulnerable heart seeking kindness
A soul strong, courageous and loyal.
You're my laughing boy, my ocean child
So I'll sing you a sweet birthday song
Born that night in the heart of a star shower-
as the late summer moon waxed so strong.
