How do you rip a DVD?

I'm trying to rip a DVD of my kids into an .avi file so that I can play around with it in an editing program. Does anyone have any idea how to turn a DVD movie into an .avi or .mov file?

You will need to use software that is made to do so. DVD2AVI was the best one I had found when I needed to encode a similar project a while back.

Your best bet is to peruse some guides made to help you:

The other program I like is TMPGenc. I find it very useful for editing video, I believe you can use it to convert to AVI as well.
