Mine looks different today. There's a little swirly icon with the word "New!" and if I roll over it it says "Enable Google Desktop Search".

WTF? I didn't download anything new.

Not a new toolbar, more or less just a promo from Google to get you to try their Desktop Search. If you've got a fast machine with lotsa memory, its OK - otherwise, don't bother.

Well, the machine is shared - my kids use it too - one of them will likely click on it even if I don't. Argh.

Odd, my toolbar on my office machine is still the same old one - just the one at home is changed.

There is a new toolbar out, with a controversial feature called "AutoLink" that many are kinda pissed about (it's similar to the "Smart Tags" that Microsoft got crucified for). The new feature uses the toolbar to rewrite small portions of the website that is being viewed (and which is not owned by Google) and many webmasters are worried because it looks like a step in the direction of adding ads to websites google does not own or have a relationship with.

cjhsa,

Google's toolbar "silently updates". Basically, it phones home and updates without permission. So don't be surprised, they don't need a user action to upload the new code onto your machine.

Thanks - that's what I kinda figured. I see the "autolink" there too, I just turned it off. Bastids.
