There
is a new toolbar out, with a controversial feature called "AutoLink" that many are kinda pissed about (it's similar to the "Smart Tags" that Microsoft got crucified for). The new feature uses the toolbar to rewrite small portions of the website that is being viewed (and which is not owned by Google) and many webmasters are worried because it looks like a step in the direction of adding ads to websites google does not own or have a relationship with.
cjhsa,
Google's toolbar "silently updates". Basically, it phones home and updates without permission. So don't be surprised, they don't need a user action to upload the new code onto your machine.
