The German Secondary School is called Gymnasium.

The Primary or Elementary School is called Grundschule and the Middle School is called Realschule.

There is no one answer to your question. Sometime between fourth and sixth grade, depending on the German state, students enter one of three branches. The first is called the Gymnasium, which goes on until thirteenth grade (or the twelveth, depending on your state, and, sometimes on your individual school). The second and third branches are called Realschule and Hauptschule , and they go on to the 10th and the 9th grade respectively. Students at the Realschule and Hauptschule usually continue with three years of apprenticeship (Lehre), an institution peculiar to German-speaking countries that consists of professional on-the-job-training and schooling mixed about 50:50. Of the Gymnasium students, about half go to college, the other half go on for an apprenticeship too.
