Missing Msvcp71.dll file error message. HELP

Hi everyone, I am new and hope i dont seem to computer ignorant but I am in need of help. A few days ago I attempted to download a free trial of Norton Antivirus. It came straight from the Symantec site. It downloaded fine (i guess) but when it went to initialize I got a " has encounterd a error and needs to close" message. It did not finish installing and said i would need to reinstall. I tried reinstalling the product and it did fine until it came to the point of uninstalling the previous download attempt. I tried to uninstall what had made its way to my computer with no luck. When I shut down and re-booted I started recieving a error message saying file could not open Msvcp71.dll missing. I didnt know what to do so i purchased a FIX-IT 6 disc and it did alot for my computer but fix the problem with the dll file. I am unable to go to certain web pages now and I cannot even delete messages from my yahoo mail after reading them. I have managed to download a dll file but do not know where to send it after unzipping it. Can anyone please help me? I am frustrated and hate feeling stupid when it comes to my PC. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Christa

You can get the msvcp71/dll file at

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcp71

It goes in the windows/system32 directory

Thank you Intrepid
I downloaded the file and unzipped it. This fixed the problem I was having with the dll error message. The only problem I have now is that I seem to have lost a lot of MSN components. I still cannot click on some things or delete emails. And I cannot get any webpage that has msn in its name. I can log onto MSN Messenger but cannot go to my emails from any point. Any suggestions? Thanks , Christa

Are you using the MSN browser and MSN Messenger? If so, I suggest removing them through Add/Delete Programs, then downloading and re-installing. If you're on a slow connection, Microsoft/MSN will send you an install disk for the asking.

You need an unzip file utility. There are a few out there. A couple are even free. Just type unzip into Google, or whatever your search engine is and you will have your choice of programs.

Compare: MSVCp71.dll and MSVCr71.dll
.

Sometimes computer text is tiny, and you have to look two or three times to verify a file name. {In considering this has happened to me, I increase the font of this reply to make the text larger to read. } There are two files very similar. Only one character in the file name is different. This is the difference of two letters in the English alphabet. Boring, yet there it is. A, B, C, D, E, F, G ... N, O, P, Q, R ...

Now compare how close the P and the R look when there is a 'C' in front and a '7' on the right of it:

CP7 vs CR7

Now compare the same two letters in a longer string of characters. Instead of three characters in a string, view the same characters in the midst of an 8 or 9 character string:

MSVCP71.dll vs MSVCR71.dll

I think it is plausible that many who think they have an issue with MSVCp71.dll, are actually having the issue with MSVCr71.dll

Note the different between the characters 'p' and 'r.'

*salute*

Now if you have the issue with MSVCR.dll you can download the file from this link here.
When you download it, unzip and place the 'dll' file in your windows/system folder

Happy com pu ting.
