ul, that's a beautiful little bird in your avatar. "Sojka" in Slovak. What do you call them in German?

oh, that does look fun! we're going to some funky bar on mariahilferstrasse tonight, we'll see what that is. don't know the name.

the professor does want to head out of town after all - so kahlenberg sounds like a definite possibility now. Or maybe even Kreutz (spelling?) - which is an hour away I hear but supposedly worth it. We have a whole afternoon anyway. Dunno if he will want to travel so much, since he is flying in from the States that morning and then flying off to Israel the next day... This was a tip from a local colleague, might be fun. Anyone been to Kreutz?

There is a Best Western Hotel.

Heading out of town- what kind of transportation?
If you don't have to take public transportation you might try to drive along Höhenstraße, have a stop at Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg, http://www.aeiou.at/aeiou.encyclop.l/l546666.htm;internal&action=_setlanguage.action?LANGUAGE=en, Kloster Neuburg, then to
a good restaurant in the Viennese Woods

dag : on a nice and sunny day take a trip to "baden bei wien". make sure you take the oldfashioned tram (leaving near the karls-kirche); it's faster by car but not nearly as much fun. baden will put you back into "biedermeier-zeit". there is a casino, a spa(which we did not visit), nice gardens, restaurants ... thoroughly : old austria . hbg

Tomorrow is National Holiday- Nationalfeiertag.
Just in time the Parliamen is ready. Looks white again. Hard to imagine that Vienna was once called the "White City". Acid rain and traffic blackened the white sandstone buildings.
Flags are out and the army has the tanks on display on Heldenplatz.
And I have a free day tomorrow- yeah. Very Happy Very Happy

Durnstein is the quaintest little wine-making town. We had some Sturm, as well as taste of this year's wine. Pretty darn good.

Great- the weather was terrific on Sunday.
Göttweig is nice- a very popular wedding place.

Have you watched some movies at the Film Festival? I wanted to, but had no time.

note the abundance of geraniums [sp?]

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RQABA4ETY4pU52gy!Q3x6Ii!fx6Mo9TfxSqpKdXsyW8I4W0SA0etx2iaiehioozW0uxHh7a30AG77hWFLGibhyKO*xoSNEqW4FB43dqat9g/IMG_0305.JPG

Old city walls. With a geranium, that couldn't have missed in the little window up there

There is a ruin upon ruin in Durstein. An old monastery, a castle, something else that i forget. People lived there for tens of thousands of years, and it does show. The soil is fertile and loved by people that live on it. Truly remarkable little town.

Viennale? No, I completely missed it. Along with the Jazz Days in Bratislava. Bummer, both had a terrific program lined up.

Dürnstein- the legend says that Richard Lionheart was kept prisoner there, and that his servant Blondel found him. The ransom was paid and he went home to England. Good for Robin Hood.

I think you had a "Heurigen"- this year's wine. But actually it is already an old Heurigen. This year's wine will be ready in November. It is still "Sturm".

Beautiful pictures.
