there are zillions of chipsets on the intel web site. i don't know which one to look for. i selected 915 chipset family, for that's what's written up there in that analysis, and there are another zillions of possible downloads. which of these should i try? i don't want to mess things up more than they are..

Hmm, it seems as if the link I pasted previously ceased to work. Anyhow, the file you need is: "INF Update Utility [INFINST_AUTOL.EXE] (793KB) 7.2.1.1003 7/11/2005"

Once you've downloaded it, simply run the file, follow the few instructions you get. Then it will ask to restart the computer. Just do that and it should be installed and working properly. Then see if the computer crashes when you're trying to use the camera. If you're lucky it won't.

well, knock on wood. my computer hasn't crashed yet. tried the cam/mike on Yahoo messenger, it worked, albeit in slow motion ( i have sort of a wireless dial-up, slower than broadband). i did that chipset update, computer did all sorts of sounds and ritual dances incomprehensible to I, I just kept clicking 'yes' and 'allow' and gave the general encouragement and support. thanks, derevon for everything.

Glad you got it to work. Those bluescreen problems can often be very hard to track down and resolve, because they can be caused by so many different things.
