Hi,

Who narrates this reading of H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds in Carl Sagan's Cosmos episode 5 (Blues for a Red Planet)?

I have checked imdb and the credits, but it is not listed. The voice came across so familiar to me, but perhaps it's a nobody?

Clip can be found here: https://youtu.be/OPdLGXFKbXM&t=140s

Thank you so much for helping.

@Willow2,
If you mean the British guy, the voice sounds a bit like HG Wells, but I suspect that it's actually some nameless British narrator.

@Brandon9000,
That is exactly what I meant, @Brandon9000.

I suppose you are right. I thought it was someone famous, but what you are saying makes more sense.

Thanks a bunch.

@Willow2,
It's directly lifted from the conept album War of the Worlds by Jeff Wayne. The contributors are all listed on that.

It's quite well known, I think Justin Hayward had a number one with Forever Autumn which features on the album.

It's Richard Burton, his voice is very distinctive.

@Brandon9000,
Richard Burton is actually quite famous.

You don't get to call him nameless just because he's not American.

Do you have to be so Anglophobic?

@izzythepush,

i did -- couldn't find anything definitive.

Burton's imdb doesn't mention it either
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000009/

but it does sound like his voice... although i suppose it could be someone trying to sound like Sir Richard...

@Region Philbis,
I can't post links, but if you look on the Wikipedia page he's listed.

This album came out when I was 16 and well into contemporary music. For about two weeks there was little else played on the radio.

Here is Burton reading in Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.

If you compare it with the Cosmos segment, it is identical.

@Region Philbis,
Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of War Of The Worlds.

That's the title of the wiki page.

so the recording used in Cosmos was taken from this album?

@Region Philbis,
I would say so. It sounds exactly like it.

It's not like they're cutting and pasting the whole lot, it's a small segment which is usually allowable.

@izzythepush,
Wow, @izzythepush! I listened to both of them and there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that you are right.

I am left flabbergasted and astounded - mouth wide open - over the accuracy of your answer and extent of your knowledge.

Thank you very much. I salute you.

Kind regards,
Willow

Your incessant false arguments are very tiresome. I know very well who Richard Burton is. I just didn't recognize the voice.

@Willow2,
That's very kind of you to say so, but like I said,this record came out when I was 16, at a time when I followed the charts religiously.
