It can be very confusing, especially if worded just right. I've known some people who haven't been able to understand the correct solution from wrong and truly think it's a real paradox.
Why do you add the $2 (guys tip) to the room cost twice?
They were originally charged 30, then they got $3 back, that's 27. These 27 are: 25 for the room plus 2 for the "tip".... You do not add $2 to $27, it's already in it!
Or second way to look at it:
The room was 25, plus $2 tip = $27. That's it. forget the change.
Think of it this way:
You order take out food, and the bill is $25. You want to give delivery guy $2 tip, but you only have $10 bills. So you give him $30, and ask for $3 change. That's basically what was going on there in the hotel.
