Hi
I just need a little reassurance!
I recently had a disk problem on my Dell Dimension and during the subsequent chkdsk run the following files were flagged as corrupted and were removed
mstask.dll
mstext40.dll
mstinit.exe
Obviously my task scheduler stopped working. Panicking a little I searched for these files and found copies in;
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
I copied these to
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
and everything seems fine again. Did I do the right thing? or have I broken some holy Techie law?
This the best tech forum I know hope you can put my mind at rest!
Ta!
You did just fine. The files in the servicepack directory should be copies of those in system32. You didn't break any Techie law, you followed a logical direction and it worked.
Welcome to A2K
Yup, I agree with Intrepid on this one; ya done good.
Thanks
Thanks Guys - breathing easier now!
A colleague suggested that I could have run "sfc /scannow" and got the same result.
Whatever floats your boat I suppose.
Thanks again.
Depending on your register settings, "sfc /scannow" may request your original XP CD. This is not always included with a new PC. SFC checks for missing files in a cache folder. The same files are in the C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder where you found the missing files.
