Burning video files onto DVD

Reply Sun 17 Jul, 2005 01:21 pm
I have a whole bunch of movie files in avi. format and all I want to do is to burn them onto a DVD so I can watch them on any DVD player, including my computer. I currently have DYNEX DVD+Rs. I tried using Nero Startsmart, but it told me to convert them into ifo., bup., and vob. files. I downloaded a converter and did this, but then Nero gave me an error that I had to use DVD+R/RW. Is there any easier way to directly burn avi onto a DVD+R or are there any other ways to do waht I am trying to do.

Try following an "avi to dvd" guide such as:

I don't really understand what the problem is. Nero says you have to use DVD+R/RW even though that's what you're using, and therefore you can't burn?

I'm using a DVD+R and it gives me an error saying exactly: "This disc is not writable. Please insert a DVD+R/RW." I know that the discs are blank cause i bought them new, unless they were all used and then returned, which would be crazy. That's the problem.

What does it tell you if you choose "Disc info" in the Recorder menu with the disc inserted?

Have you been able to burn DVD:s of the same brand and type with any content previously?

It's hard to say what the problem is, but you could try burning to a virtual DVD (ISO-file). In the Recorder menu, select "Choose recorder..." and then Image Recorder and click OK. Now try to burn the DVD as you would an ordinary DVD, the difference here being that you will now be prompted for filename and a directory to store the file in. If it works you will have an ISO-file of the DVD that can be burnt in Nero by selecting "Burn Image" in the Recorder menu. If you have for example "Daemon Tools" you can mount this ISO-file as a virtual DVD-disc and play it in for example WinDVD or PowerDVD as you would any normal DVD-movie.

If you aren't able to burn to an image either you can at least exclude the possibility that the discs are no good. Then the problem may lie in Nero's DVD authoring software. If it works to burn to an image, you could try using discs of other brands, or try downloading the latest firmware upgrade on the manufacturer's homepage. Good luck.

i think my nero is just messed up. Cause it keeps telling me that i need a DVD+R/RW. I've used these DVDs before for burning musicand they work just fine. It's just Nero. Thanks though.

I had the same problem and it seemed that my Nero version was old and doesn't work with DVD.
I just run a new version of Nero and everything worked fine.

Mine is already upgraded, so I don't know why it still doesn't work.

Have you use Nero Vision Express 3? You will need to convert avi to mpeg first before you can burn to disk as a dvd. If you are capturing videos you can use Nero Vision Express 3 and save as dvd by selecting a capturing template as dvd and then burn.
Try going to Nero website ( www.nero.com ) and use their Clean Tools ( Support/Tools/Clean Tools). This will give a clean reinstall.

I do all my capturing in Nero Vision Express 3 and have good luck with it.
