State Dept: Incomplete Account Of Foreign Gifts Given To Trump And Officials In 2020


The State Department said in a report that it has an incomplete accounting of gifts presented to former President Trump, former Vice President Mike Pence and other former Trump administration officials during Trump’s final year in office.

The department’s claim is issued in a full report set to be published in the Federal Register on Monday. A preview of the 2020 report was made available to the public on Friday ahead of its formal publication on Monday.

Citing missing data from the White House in the report, the department said the Executive Office of the President did not submit information about gifts received by Trump and his family from foreign leaders in 2020. Additionally, the department noted that the General Services Administration did not submit information related to gifts Pence and White House staffers received from foreign leaders in 2020.

The department wrote that it attempted to collect the missing information from the National Archives and Records Administration and the General Services Administration, but it was confirmed that “potentially relevant records are not available” to the protocol office “under applicable access rules for retired records.”

Former reality TV star and former president Donald Trump endorsed former TV huckster Dr. Mehmet Oz in a statement on Saturday. Oz is running as a Republican for a Pennsylvania Senate seat.

“I have known Dr. Oz for many years, as have many others, even if only through his very successful television show,” Trump said in the statement, adding, “He has lived with us through the screen and has always been popular, respected and smart.” Trump also praised Oz’s popularity with women. Women “are drawn to Dr. Oz for his advice and counsel,” said Trump, who has been credibly accused of assault by multiple women and bragged on tape about serially groping women.

Oz and Trump have a history. During the 2016 race, Oz invited Trump to his show where the then-candidate shared a letter about his health signed by Dr. Howard Bornstein, a gastroenterologist who later admitted that Trump “dictated that whole letter” to him. “I didn’t write that letter. I just made it up as I went along,” Bornstein said. Trump never released his full medical records. And a few weeks after Trump entered office, Bornstein said that Trump’s bodyguard and a Trump Organization lawyer “raided” the doctor’s office, leaving with Trump’s records.

But Oz accepted at face value the letter Trump showed him and later said on the Today show that the information he saw “indicate[d] that [Trump] is healthy enough to be president.”

Government ethics experts say they are stunned after the US State Department said records are missing of the gifts Donald Trump received while he was president.

“It’s flagrant and it looks terrible,” Richard Painter, who served as former president George W Bush’s top ethics lawyer, told The New York Times. “Either it was really stupid or really corrupt.”

Federal officials are required by law to inform the State Department of any gifts from foreign governments worth more than $415. But as the Trump administration made its chaotic exit from the White House in January 2021, it allegedly neglected to send the list.

As a result, the State Department said in its report, much of the required data is missing – specifically, all gifts to all White House officials for the entire year of 2020.
