Oh, this has me all zazzed up. It gives me something to think about. Especially because I'm an English teacher and and am supposed to model correct speech for classes, not only during, but before and after. As for prepositions at the end of sentences, I don't belive I could do without.

Of course you can end a sentence with a preposition:

"This sentence ends with A PREPOSITION"

I believe Winston Churchill said

"Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I shall not put."

The truth is, language is a tool of communication and is forever evolving. Grammar rules are not set in stone for all time. Yes, we DO end sentences with prepositions, we DO split infinitives, we DO use 'ain't' and 'irregardless' and use 'impact' as a verb. We DO begin sentences with a conjuction. (But I don't.)

Grammar is a tool to help clarify meaning. As long as all parties to a message understand that message clearly, grammar is virtually irrelevant.

Ending with a preposition is one of those habits that there is nothing wrong with. It is, in fact, very frequently indulged in. And I don't see why we should try not to. I find it is a way of writing that I am satisfied by.

Actually, Equus, what Churchill is supposed to have said is that a rigid insistence on not ending sentences with prepositions is "the sort of arrant pedantry up with which I shall not put."

At any rate, that's the quote Churchill is often given credit for. Apparently, however, there's some doubt about whether he actually said it, and, if so, the exact words he used to say it with. At least, that's what the guy at http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/churchill.html says, and he seems to know what he's speaking of.

well, I'll reform myself and try to stop being so uptight about prepositions at the end of sentences, afterall it's just one more thing I can stop worrying about.

Equus,

I'd like to know what kind of proposition you're thinking of.

Or, were you referring to sentence, as in, jail sentence:

Quote:
I couldn't take it any longer
Lord I was crazy
When the feeling came upon me
Like a tidal wave
Started swearing to my God and on my mother's grave

That I would love you to the end of time
I swore that I would love you to the end of time!

So now I'm praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive
Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you
I don't think that I can really survive

I'll never break my promise or forget my vow
But God only knows what I can do right now

I'm praying for the end of time
It's all that I can do
Praying for the end of time,
so I can end my time with you!!!
