And a slightly larger one:

The second one was actually landed by some other more experienced fisherman. The first my boy caught all by himself. Cool.

I got skunked, though some monster of th e deep did eat my line at one point. And I mean he ate it.

He needs a haircut.

Those are leopard sharks - not too agressive and not too many teeth!!!

If you prepare them properly, and it's kind of like the way you kill a cow, they taste kinda like swordfish.

I have heard leopard sharks can grow to a length of 85 feet.

We didn't catch any keepers today. They have to be at least 36" long, and even then, they live in the SF bay, and it is fairly contaminated, so the bottom feeders like these guys aren't your best choice for dinner.

These leopards literally teem in the bay. You could probably fish with an old smelly shoe on your hook.

They look too young to be landed and kept.

We had fun, connecting with each other and the environment. That's what it's about. The bay is beautiful, contaminated as it may be (or so they say).

dlowan, 36" minimum length for leopards. We kept nothing, and always follow the rules. Those who don't are poachers.

I can't make out the boy's line. Were you all using wire leaders?

I didn't have any wire leader, so we really cut those sharks a break. Wink Next time I'll be better prepared. Though I've lived here a long time, saltwater fishing is new to me.

One thing about sharks - they're much tougher than most fish. Skin like leather, no bones, they can breath air for a time. Catch and release with them isn't like dealing with trout, which you can kill with a fingerprint.

That 4-footer went straight home to a barbecue, by the way. We weren't invited.
