Sorry to stretch and bend the definition of stand-up comedian, but I offer the name of Trevor Noah. He is really a social/political commentator, as well as bestselling author, talk show host and brilliantly funny man.

The funniest comedian I have ever seen is Rick Mayall. It’s the only occasion I wanted him to stop being funny because my sides were aching so much.

There's so many stand up comedians around these days you could throw a stone in any direction and you're sure to hit one.

My favourite, the one and only and never bettered Dave Allen.

When all the second rate racists of the 70s were swept aside by alternative comedy Dave Allen remained relevant throughout.

I’ve got a lot of time for Bob Monkhouse too, he was another one who stayed in there, bowing out with one last piece of standup to an invited audience of comedians before dying of cancer.

That deserves a mention if nothing else.
