Hi,
I have a Dell Dimension 2400 PC, and have just added a new Maxtor 40GB HDD to it.
I added it to the Primary IDE line, as a 'slave' to my 'master' HDD which holds my operating system (Win XP Pro Edition).
On the secondary line, I have my factory installed CD-R / DVD Rom as the 'master', and a DVD-R Drive as a 'slave' which I added myself before.
Now, everything seems to be fine. All original drives have been picked up and my PC is running as normal. The added second HDD doesn't appear in 'My Computer' in Windows. All of the original drives appear as normal.
Have checked in 'Device Manager' under 'Disck Drives' and my newly added hard disk is in there. I've checked it's properties, and there are no errors and it appears to be fine - although if I check 'Volumes' it states that the drive is 'Not Initialised' - any ideas?
All I could think of is that maybe I've caused a conflict by putting 2 HDD's on one IDE line. I do seem to remember somewhere in my old computer courses that HDD's should be installed on separate IDE lines, so maybe that could be a problem. Although it seems to have been picked up by Win XP okay.
Have also been into the BIOS and checked that - also okay. It lists the 2 Hard Disk drives in order, and the 2 CD/DVD drives.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
SOLVED IT!!
Just searched the net and realised what I needed to do!
Go to 'run' command, and type : diskmgmt.msc
This gave me a list of my drives, and showed my newly-added disk. Right-clicked on the disk, and selected 'Initialise Disk', and then created the disk partition and formatted it.
Now it shows up in 'My Computer', and is working a treat!
I don't know if I can help you here but I had a 120 GB Maxtor hard disk added as slave. My PC couldn't see it until I downloaded its driver from maxtor.com
Try to download and install its driver if found
Hi Cyanure,
I thought that at first, but going through the Device Manager', it showed that it had picked up a suitable driver as a default, which is what puzzled me at first.
