Automated messages?

My best friend just found out her bf has a tinder account that she didn’t know about. She can see that there was a message sent a few months ago from him to a girl, but no response from her. He is claiming that tinder can randomly generate messages to people you match with. We are both tinder naive and are wondering if this is possible or if he’s a big of a **** as he seems.
