Hello my name is Alex. I am from Brazil. I was at an open fair in Raleigh in North Carolina in January 2005 and I bought a silver ring , well made with very interesting incriptions in latin Pax aut Bellum Justititia Universalis. It also has an egyption pyramid, an owl, We never sleep, and a dove flying with some plant in its beak and a chain.. on the ring there is a golden crown a chain a sword. I wonder where it might have come from?
thanks

I googled the latin and let google change it to
"pax aut bellum justitia universalis "
The original is gone but I tried the cached page and found a couple of symbols you might recognize. (It's in Danish, I think.)

Does the ring have the emblems from this page?

Cached Google page

It appears to be part of the I.O.O.F. The International Order of Odd Fellows. A society like the Elks, Masons etc. The 3 link chain is the symbol used by the IOOF guilds I have seen.

Very interesting. I'd never heard of this Order.

Quote:
To Improve and Elevate the Character of Man
In 17th century England, it was odd to find people organized for the purpose of giving aid to those in need and of pursuing projects for the benefit of all mankind. Those who belonged to such an organization were called "Odd Fellows". Odd Fellows are also known as "The Three Link Fraternity" which stands for Friendship, Love and Truth.

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows was founded on the North American Continent in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 26, 1819 when Thomas Wildey and four members of the Order from England instituted Washington Lodge No. 1. This lodge received its charter from Manchester Unity of Odd Fellows in England.

Odd Fellowship became the 1st national fraternity to include both men and women when it adopted the beautiful Rebekah Degree on September 20, 1851. This degree is based on the teachings found in the Holy Bible, and was written by the Honorable Schuyler Colfax who was Vice President of the United States during the period 1868-1873. Odd Fellows and Rebekahs were also the first fraternal organization to establish homes for our senior members and for orphaned children.

I first heard of them in college. The local order had a Saturday Pancake feed every week. A great deal for poor starving college kids. $2 for all you could eat. $2.50 if you wanted eggs with the pancakes.

Then there is an old hall a couple of blocks from where I work and another that I drive by on my way to work. The I.O.O.F. stands out when carved out of granite.

The IOOF is here in Australia and is in the form of a mutual assistance society that I think went public and is involved in, among other things, health insurance.

Hi.

Youve misspelled it, the motto is PAX AUT BELLUM - JUSTITIA UNIVERSALIS, and it means "in peace and war-common justice". It is the motto of a fraternity/free mason type order called Patriarchs Militant. Originated after the US civil war, but it exists in a few other countries. Google it ;-)

By the way, Im Danish, so if you have any translation Qs, just ask.
