I'm thinking of joining a gym that would be about $350 a year. State-of-the-art, lots of amenities. Good price?

That sounds good if you are getting a pool also, I was shopping 24H.F. for around $27.50 with access to the whole thing and lappool.

When I see posts like this I realize how f**king expensive London is.

I really should move to the US - I may be able to save some money for my old age

Blimey!!Thats alot.

In the UK its £30 joining fee, then £33 a month to use everything as many times a month you like(I think there is a pool)Not the most luxurious of gyms but its got relevant equipment there.
Or I pay £6.80 each time i go in as Im not a member.Members pay something like £5.50.

Obviously different places vary,my brother and a friend go to a place where you pay £15 a go!!!

That would probably be a reasonable price in Oz. Then there's the women's only gyms which charge roughly twice as much.

Hiya Wilso, thanks.

Material girl, I'd have to look up the exchange rate, but I'm pretty sure £33 a month is more than $350 a year...

Yeah, 33 pounds is 60 USD! So the gym you're talking about is the equivalent of $720 a year to my $350! (Or to put it another way, my $350 a year is equivalent to £16 a month.)

I see what the Prince means...

Any other Americans? Midwesterners, especially? (I usually adore having overseas input, but this is pretty market-specific...)

$350 for the year sounds reasonable.

I'd say the average for a gym is between $30-$50 monthly out here.

Now get your ass in there, and stop worrying about pennies.

If I had more pennies I wouldn't have to worry about them!!

But yeah, I'm looking forward to it.

And remember to paint your face like the Indians did to prepare for war.

Also, while lifting weights, scream at the top of your lungs to show everyone just how intense you are.

And make sure I don't shower for a week or so, just to prove I'm hardcore, right? (Some of those weightlifting dudes REEK.)

Yes. Even though it's not common, once in a while you run across someone that just STINKS.

Don't shave your face, either.

Depends on what you are looking for. You can get a real cheap membership at say Bally's or the Y but a lot of people don't like it there. My wife was a GM for a small gym for a while and they charged $49 a month for a membership. Nothing fancy but they didn't let in anybody under the age of 18. Most of their members consisted of people who had a membership at Bally's or the Y and hated it there. They came to her small gym where there were no kids and nobody shooting up in the locker room.

So if you just want something inexpensive, I'd say $350 a year is a great price.

A "Y" membership here costs $400 a year--$350 with the senior discount.

If it makes you feel any better, it's about $65.00 a month to join a New York Sports Club, more if you want to use more than one location. I can join an Equinox for about half that, but they are nothing fancy. Just weights and workout machines.

This is actually very fancy -- when I said state of the art I wasn't kidding -- not just pool but whirlpools, saunas, massage therapy, and onsite babysitting (for a fee, but the fee's not bad 'tall). So I'm feeling better about the price, thanks.

I think I'll still do a monthly thing first, see whether it lives up to its promise, then do yearly if I like it (better deal.)

There is nothing better after a hard workout than a whirlpool.

Don't fall asleep.
