A request was made for a topic on Australian birds. I certainly can't claim to be an expert, but I thought I'd take on the job. I've just found out that Australia is home to between 775 - 800 different bird species which includes both native and introduced. The Brit's actually imported sparrows out of homesickness!!!
Probably the most famous outside Australia are the parrots of which there are 39 species, most of which are native or migratory.
I"m going to post some links here with photographs and info as I find it. If anyone has any questions re Australian birds, I'll certainly try to find the answer for you.

You guys sure have some beautiful birds in your parts. I'll check out those sites in a bit. Thanks for sharing ;-)
Wow!!!! I've never seen such beautiful birds :-) The yellow one is similar to the yellow finch's we get up this way except our finch's are smaller.
Rainbow Lorikeets-they're really beautiful.
Gorgeous! More, more. And that was the little Fairy Wren, again, such a beautiful blue!
I love that first bird photograph... the eye line goes right into the same plane as the bill. What a darling bird....its feathers are hairy-looking!
My favorite is the Lyre Bird. I did a little research report on them in elementary school. The last time I looked online, I couldn't find a good picture.
humm..not very many nice photos out there, thats for sure
Like a toss between pheasant and peacock it looks like
Wilso- Thanks so much. I have seen Rainbow Lorikeets, perhaps in Busch Gardens, but NEVER in the wild. They are exquisite!

You're a star!
The rainbow lorikeets are brilliant. Where I used to live they used to fly over in a mass to the local park at dusk. Just stunning, but very noisy!
There's a couple of places down the south coast where the birds are everywhere - I also recommend visitors go there, if they have the time, because the wildlife is stunning.
