It's not that I find the Chunnel itself funny ... just your considering it a land border between England and France. I thought France was a good candidate as the answer, but only saw it land-bordering 8 countries.

I was looking at the Atlantic, North, and Mediterranean as the seas it bordered.

I still don't know what Le Manche is, sorry. Remember ... I'm ... way ... over ... here. Embarrassed

La Manche is how French name the Channel, that is, the sea between France and UK.

Other (earlier) names would be Oceanus Britannicus and the British Sea
(The current English name [in general use since the early 18th century] probably derives from the designation "canal" in Dutch sea atlases of the late 16th century. )

The country we are looking for has 11,000 lakes, is roughly the size or slightly smaller than the State I live in, borders 5 other countries, is landlocked, and calls itself a "republic" when it in fact appears to be a dictatorship.

The name of this country's parliament is in a language, people more than 500 miles away usually speak.

Tico your non recognition of Le Manche is quite understandable, not just being several thousand miles away, but because it is as Francis and others have said La Manche.

(Now for many years I thought it was female until I was pursuaded it was male...should have stuck with my instincts)

now where were we....?

Yes, Francis - and 'no', Steve.

Citizens of this country speak in a language (nearly) identical to those of their neighbouring countries.

Thta "parliament-name-giving-language-country" is "two seas" away.

And what I find most interesting is that when you want to go from the government's site to that of the head of state ...

Quote:
The link you are about to follow will take you to a site not maintained or endorsed by ...
The ... Government accepts no responsibility for the accuracy or currency of information provided on external sites.

And the name of the parliament is in this language, correct.
