Updated Windows - computer now locked in endless re-starts

I posted this at the bottom of my other thread, but I know that few people will be likely to read it as the thread is already 3 weeks old. As such, I have made a new thread for my new problem.

I was updating Windows today, after which I ran into a problem. I ran the Windows update successfully, however upon restarting my computer (for the changes to take effect), my computer became locked in an endless cycle of re-starts. Every time it loads just past the window with the Windows name and moving bar below it, the computer restarts. I have tried loading it in safe mode, as well as loading with the last know good configuration, but both have the same results.

I haven't a clue what to do. I can't even get my computer loaded now (I'm writing from my wife's comp). Please Help! Sad

Can you boot from floppy or CD? If you can, maybe you can get into the startup areas on the hard drive and look for a restart command/script/executable. It sounds like the upgrade didn't clean up after itself properly.

Specifically look under Local Disk ( C: ) - Documents and Settings - Administrator - Start Menu - Startup.

Press F8 when booting your computer. You will see a list of options - Safe Mode etc and near the bottom is the option to turn off the reboot function. This will stop the automatic reboot.

However, you should also install and run a professional AntiVirus program. You should also try uninstalling the updates and see if your computer boots normally. If it does then you should contact Microsoft who will help.

I don't understand Intrepid, why would there be an "automatic reboot" function that prevents the system from booting properly?

Did you read the post by shamus? The computer is in an endless restart. The automatic reboot being turned off would prevent it from continuous restarting.

I did, and yours too. Why would there be such a thing?

Perhaps I should elaborate. I can shut my computer off by hitting the power button, but if I leave it on it just re-starts again and again.

I have checked through my disks, but don't seem to have a boot up one. I tried using my Windows XP cd, but that did nothing.

Any other thoughts?

Did you try Intrepid's suggestion?

Yes, but it only stops the computer from starting back up after it has already tried to re-start itself. The fact that the computer boots back up is not the issue, it's the fact that my computer will only load so far before trying to restart itself that is the problem.

Perhaps I can put it a slightly different way. Windows has a feature where if it encounters a problem it reboots. This can happen for a variety of reasons. i.e. if a particular driver cannot be found it could do this.

Shamus, check my earlier suggestions (about startup).

Then, if that doesn't work, install Linux.

You need a boot CD (or floppy). Maybe your Windows XP cd is not bootable?

I had a similar problem with Symantec antivirus and pcAnywhere installed on the same machine. It would boot, almost get to the logon screen, then reboot. I had to manually remove both programs in safe mode before it would boot properly.

XP has a repair feature if you boot from the Windows XP cd.

Or use F8 to enter safe mode and then use add/remove programs to remove the recent Windows updates.

I already suggested this on post number 3 in this thread :-)

I know; sometimes repetition helps.
