BitTorrent Help

Does anybody here use BitTorrent?

I've only just got it recently so I participate in the network and share a few files whilst getting a few that I'd like. (I haven't actually used it yet, because I need one question answered before I even attempt to use it).

There are a few files on my computer that must not be shared with the community. These are private files, some containing personal information, others containing information that if released on to the Net, would enable people to steal some of my fanfic and novel ideas.

Is there a way to stop these files from being uploaded from my computer? Thank you in advance for your help.

EDIT: Is this in the wrong section? I say it, because I suddenly realised that there were more BitTorrent threads in the Internet section than this one. If so, please be so kind as to move this to the correct forum and I apologise for posting in the wrong one.
