I am doing research on Trust, what it is and how it works, and I am looking for a person or book that has explored it well in a philosophical sense.

Essentially I am looking for a book about the essence of trust.

Can anyone here point me in a good direction?

Try Ayesha by Sir Henry Rider Haggard. There's a lot of trusting in that and Sir Henry himself was a pretty trustworthy person like most well educated English gentlemen.
