What do we think is important about human beings?

That they are immortal souls……………………Christian & Muslim ethics

That they flourish and thrive in good communities ….Aristotelean ethics

That they are happy………………………………….utilitarian ethics

That they are rational agents with plans……………….Kantian ethics

Does one's personal ethics depend on the kind of imperative as the utilitarian (maximize well-being) and the Kantian (achieve the fulfillment of acting as a reasoning creature) schemes or that derived from the virtue ethics proposed by Aristotle in his Nicomachean Ethics where one is encouraged to act with partiality towards oneself and ones friends in a way that is congruous with our common sense of ethical behavior.

Do virtue ethics create the same kind of imperative as the utilitarian (maximize well-being) and Kantian (achieve the fulfillment of acting as a reasoning creature) schemes?

for background the following citations

have at it.

and a shout out to Fresco, who i hope drops by, because i have just begun reading "Prehistory of the mind: the cognitive origins of art, religion, and science" by steven mithen.... and it appears an easier read than Gurdjieff.

Can I choose all the above and also add a special order of:

Various strains of Buddhism, Hedonism, Mysticism and MTV, sprinkle with a little Hinduism, then blend it all with in a Greek Pagan Sex Religion base?

After imbibing heartily, retire to the other room and have a nice tall glass of Asceticsim.

Then come back for the next course! Twisted Evil

Do we have to choose one to the exclusion of others?

***

I'd like to think it can be like a smorgasbord and we can pick what we like from each...but that is probably problematic too.

One thing that took me too long to learn: It is important for us to be happy.

I mean, even if all you want to is be selfless and help others, you have to take care of yourself. Sometimes if you reward yourself and spoil yourself a little, this helps you get so excited or passionate about life that you end up helping others more than you would of if you had been a very dry serious masochistic ascetic focused solely on helping others.

To sum it up: I think we need a combination. Which combination is best? Hmmm....still studying that...I'll get back to you in a few lifetimes...

Virtue ethics is not utilitarian. Virtue ethics focuses on the good development of people's characters so that we could "flourish" as human beings (friendship, compassion, courage, etc.). Kantian ethics, is an ethic that sets out a groundrule for respect for all human being. I am for the latter with Virtue development theory on developing character.

The question of how should one live, is the very core of ethical philosophy. Good thread Very Happy .
