This antebellum residence survived the siege of Petersburg during the Civil War and was later enlarged by railway tycoon Alexander Hamilton.
During World War I, the mansion served as an officer's club for the nearby Camp Lee military base and was the residence of General Pershing.
Later, it was home to the family of Hollywood star Joseph Cotten, Orson Welles' alter ego (Gaslight, Duel in the Sun, The Third Man, Citizen Kane), born and buried in Petersburg.
