I once wanted to go stay there and do art work - it was back in the seventies. Since then I've read some negatives about all that, but even those articles were a while ago. (I'm not too enthused about being in an expatriate colony anywhere),
Now, in checking if it was precisely between Guadalajara and Veracruz, I ran across this link for rentals there in what I gather they call SMA.
Now I think it would be fun to visit and explore some of the fairly nearby colonial cities.
