a hint to the name of the mansion:
The state should be obvious.
Afton Mountain Swannanoa Marble Palace in Virginia
(thanks for the hints

)
Well, M.D. Hints are helpful if one places them correctly. Yes, Mr. Turtle. When I visited the place it had been vandalized, but the huge stained glass window was untouched, and it was surmised that the vandals thought it to be a religious symbol. Isn't that odd?
Your turn, honey.
see if i can make this tougher--it's a painting, obviously, but i'm after the place depicted, and the 2 celebs it's associated with. incidentally, it's not a place i've actually visited, but i do have a connection to it.
I hate to ask, M.D. but is that a church, and is it in Europe?
UhOh. Is it in that part of Europe that I like to call the mainland: Germany, France; Spain or Italy?
Eastern Europe, Mr. Turtle?
no, western; here's a big clue: the celebs were aristocrats
okay, yit. Let's go for the painting. Is it by a popular painter and is it in the U.K.?
England, to be precise, but i've no idea who the painter might be. one celeb was an extremely well-known literary figure.
I forgot about your celeb hint, Yit. So you are connected to the two in some way? Is this famous duo related in some way to you?
(wonder whatever happened to Chaplin?)
My word, Mr. Turtle. Is one of the writers Herman Melville? Dummy Letty.
The Christ was very fond of her...
Welcome back, Francis. I suppose your reference is to Mary, and I'm trying to figure that out.
Well, is the church St. Mary's? The only other Mary that might have relevance is Mary, queen of Scots. Do you mean Mary who, Francis?
The other Mary something the Christ loved so much...
Mary Magdalene, of course, but I still don't understand the literary figure and how it relates to yitwail. I suppose it could be Leonardo de Vinci. Where is that turtle? Is the church in London?
