I see he set that in '64, and died trying to beat it in '67.

So, I was wrong about Lake Dumbleyung... that was waterspeed.

Lake Eyre for land speed, also in 1964.

Ossobuco, you've got it, congratulations. Your turn.

(I was present at Lake Eyre when Donald Campbell in his Bluebird set the record.)

Really? Neat! Tell us about it if you have time..

A friend's boyfriend was an x-15 (etc.) pilot, flew out of Edwards, knew Yaeger...
Thus I got to ride with them in his Cessna to Palm Springs for lunch one day, and once in a while to ride in his very early T-bird around the neighborhood. That was around '61 or '62..

Back in a bit, I think I have a photo at hand.

Lake Eyre is in outback South Australia and very inhospitable, nevertheless quite a few people made the trip to this isolated area when Campbell made his attempts. I was a Police Officer in them days and was sent there to keep spectators at a safe distance etc.

Mame I did not have to. Dutchy was a strapping young man, 6'2" tall with an Arnold Schwarzenegger physique to match. Smile

I'm usually pretty good at guessing what the various members of A2K look like in real life and I have a gut feeling that Dutchy bears a strong resemblance to this fellow....
