The sweet orange (Citrus x sinensis) originated in East Asia, likely in the region of Southern China, Northeast India, and Myanmar, around 8 million years ago. It's a hybrid fruit that's a cross between a non-pure mandarin orange and a hybrid pomelo with a significant mandarin component. Genomic analysis suggests that the first orange was likely 42% pomelo and 58% mandarin, with the pomelo being the maternal parent.
