The old Navy blimp hanger (current airplane museum) in Tillamook Oregon bills itself as the largest wooden building in the world:

http://www.tillamookair.com/assets/images/BlimpsHangar2.jpg

Length: 1,072 feet

Height: 192 feet
(over 15 stories)

Width: 296 feet

Area: Over 7 acres
(enough to play six football games)

Doors: 120 ft. high,
6 sections each weighing 30 tons.

220 ft. wide opening. The sections roll on railroad tracks
Catwalks: 2 catwalks, each 137 ft. above the hangar deck

I don't know if they're telling the truth or not but it is indeed a very big and very cool building.

I found this on Google:

The church of Surdesti, which is 236 feet, is said to be the tallest wooden building in Europe and possibly the entire world. This church has four small towers that surround the main, highest one.

It seems a lot of places make the claim...

Russia:

"Barsana has the tallest wooden building in Europe, a church 62 meters high"

(I don't know the metric system so I don't know how high that is.)

Guyana:

St. George's Cathedral - "reputed to be one of the world's tallest wooden buildings. Its spire rises over 132 feet."

Gliwice is the tallest building at 110 meters but it is a tower. The Radio Tower Gliwice is the transmission tower of the radio station Gliwice (Gleiwitz), situated at 50°19' N and 18°41' E. It is a 118 metre high construction of wood framework and after the demolition of the wood radio tower of Ismaning on March 16th, 1983 perhaps the only wood-built transmission tower in the world. The Radio Tower Gliwice is perhaps the tallest construction of wood in the world. It is designed to carry aerials for mediumwave broadcasting, but the transmitter is not in service any more.

Thanks osso!

Isn't it funny that there are so many buildings claiming to be the tallest?

I knew the blimp hanger did not bill itself as the tallest, just the largest. It does rank right up there with the tallest though!

It is really an amazing building. To give a sense of scale - those are train tracks running through the middle of the photo.

One of the magician David Copperfield's first big, name-building tricks was to make a train dissappear out of the building.
