If your saying it's because people are stronger on their right hand side. The chain and crank should be on the left, as the energy will have to travel further. Then the stronger leg would be working harder. To make the weeker leg do more of the work is senceless.

Because (in the US at least) we drive & ride bicycles on the right. If the chain breaks or fouls and repairs are needed, the cyclist will be able to make repairs on the side of the bike away from traffic. The chain is also more protected on the right side from debris tossed up by traffic.

Well i'm from the UK, and most peoples first reply is : ' So when you park, the chain does not contact the kerb.' Then i point out that more than half the world drive on the wrong Laughing side of the road, so that can't be it.
I have been in many bike shops, they can't give me a decent answer. If their is no reason, then still why do they do it? Confused

Why?

Many things are still done and will continue to be done, without any reason.
