"Blood on the Sun" is a good political thriller and one of my favorite Cagney films.

And it is "Blood on the Sun." No more Charddonay for you today, edgar.
LW.
I got your PM, but I was trying to tell you; Ican't send PM's yet, so you'll have to give me yours in a PM, then I can answer you and give you mine. I have changed ISP's, and have yours anymore.
Suddenly also features briefly the late Paul Frees as one of Franks henchmen. Frees provided the voice of Boris Badenov on The Bullwinkle and Rocky cartoons.
I have a $1 DVD of the film and it reads "of the Sun" on the label. I checked before typing. However, I didn't start the film just to see if the people made a mistake.
The film was as fair to the Japanese and Chinese as a film of the time could get, in my opinion.
Those dang bargain DVD's -- I know mine of "The Stranger" directed by and starring Orson Welles doesn't make any misakes on the cover but the print is blurry and full of gliches towards the end. I think they find these prints in some dead producer's attic and put them on DVD's (the cost of producing a DVD is really cheap now).
But I love going through the dollar bins. I get to catch up on dozens of movies and TV reruns.
Awright, lightwizard. I watched Suddenly again, just to make my point. So there. I don't like to crow when I'm right; what's more, I don't like to eat crow when I'm wrong. Somewhere, Mighty Casey is still at bat. But, Casey Ed struck out. I guess I was having an off day the first time, because Suddenly really is a good film. Sinatra out acted Sterling Haydon in this one. I didn't change my mind because of the reviews or anything you said, except that I wouldn't have reconsidered without your goading. Thank you, sir.
Sterling Haydon? That's not much of a stretch.
You got that right, eoe. He was perfect in Dr Strangelove, however.
I can't tell you how many times I've tried to watch a movie and been tired or distracted, leaving me wonder whether I actually liked the film or not. "Suddenly" is a psychological thriller and the political thriller aspect is probably secondary. It's Sinatra's subtle changes throughout the movie that keep it from being one-note. One can almost here him thinking when he isn't talking, an achievement I haven't seen very many times -- Robert De Niro did it in "Goodfellas." My favorite Sterling Hayden film besides "Strangelove" is "The Killing" where he had the lead and carried the film admirably.
I haven't seen The Killing.
Oh, the copy I watched of Suddenly was a different disk. I can't say for certain if one was better in clarity without digging out the other one.
I though Sterling Hayden did a fine job in "The Asphalt Jungle", too. You might like that one, Edgar.
I haven't seen that one either. You can tell by now how cinematically deprived I have been.
Edgar - I grew up with the movie theater as my baby sitter after school and on the Saturdays my mother had to work. Now, I'm reliving all the old films on TCM.
But, nobody here is as deprived as I am of seeing the new movies. I did make it to see Phantom of the Opera, though.
I've been following the colloquy re: Suddenly closely on this thread. I must admit that (1) my first reaction was to agree with Edgar's initial negative response (I don't remember the film with any fondness, either) and (2) that it's so very long since I saw the movie last that any opinions I might render are bound to be without any value. Since I don't have a copy at hand, I should really get it and watch it again before I open my big fat yap.
back to frank
no doubt by the time he did "manchurian candidate" he could actually act. and i loved him and martin and mcclain in "some came running," but if i was to select a movie to watch frank sinatra, all i can say is ON THE TOWN....yeah i know he could hardly keep up with gene kelly in the dancing scenes, but i loved the character. it was more real than about anything sinatra ever did.
one can feel the exuberance of post war new york in that movie.
My favorite Sterling Hayden performance was "Johnnny Guitar"
I was watching a clip of Frank and Gene, and I was impressed.
For a singer that was great! That;s my opinion as a dancer.
Booman
Did you like James Cagney as a dancer?
