I would imagine it's merely because they look like the lifesavers on ships.
Actually, Bob. They were designed so that should a child swallow one whole, they could breath until something could be done--hence "lifesaver".

Yep... The guy who invented life savers did so because his own child died due to choking on a piece of candy.
I just don't understand how people are supposed to get their kids to school in the morning with these silly devices.
Ohmygaawd! No wonder the driving is so screwy around here, lately. These guys are trying to cope with sobriety!
This is a great idea, and I think they should build all cars with this feature standard.
