Another obviously discarded cardinal is Law, from Boston.

The best Pope candidate from Boston is Johnny Damon.

That's true, I couldn't care less about them. The scarf was a gift from another student in italian class.

On Cardinal Law, I was amazed he had such a prominent role in the papal funeral masses.

Back to business.

According to the morning newspapers, a number of cardinals from the United States did not attend the Mass that Cardinal Law offered yesterday.

I don't see Michael Jackson on the list !?

I always like to go for the horse with the longest odds.

Nigeria, Argentina, Brazil in the order of (my guess at) likelihood

Ironically I like their international football squads as well.

I guess in terms of Catholicism and growth market, Africa would be prudent...

Danneels REPRESENT.

Actually, Danneels is relatively liberal. So that's a plus. But I think it's probably going to be an Italian.

I'm betting that Angelo Scola could kick Oscar what'shisname's ass anyday in a no-holds-barred jello wrestling match.

I thought that was the traditional method of pope picking.

I'm more interested in whether children will be any safer from molestation under the new pope than they were under the recently deceased paedophile protector.

Ratzinger it is! a2k predicted right.

Best price I could find was 7:2 with William Hill.

I was hoping they might read out all the nominations, then present the winners in reverse order.

Who came second? Does anybody know?

No one ever knows who came in second: the smoke is produced by the burning of the ballots.

My son-in-law said that Ratzinger had been in the Hitler Youth. It's known that he played a major role in the dismantling of Liberation Theology.

That makes me think of the famous letter, supposedly dictated to the three shepherd children at Fatima, Portugal by the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which the Pope was to have opened in 1960.

At the time, I heard urban legend-style stuff about it. A nun said the letter contained gibberish. Thinking of Ratzinger's history brings the letter to mind.

Like Littlek, I wanted an African.

plainoldme,
it was mandatory for all youth to join the Hitler youth program.
It doesn't mean Ratzinger was pro-Hitler.

Nevertheless, I think Ratzinger was elected purely for
political reason. Someone from South America would have
been much more suitable.

Thanks, Calamity. I just read the same info from Ul on another thread. I would have preferred an African or a South American. A candidate from either of those continents would have made the Church so much more, "catholic," in the original sense of the word.
