I went to the store today and I've decided to buy either the Toshiba M40-Jm3 or the Sony Vaio Fs550 laptop. Here are the specs:
Toshiba:
Intel Pentium M 730 processor
15.4" WXGA TFT with TrueBrite
512 Mb DDR Ram
60 GB HDD
DVD super multi double layer optical drive
Built in wireless 802.11 a/g
NVIDIA Geforce FX6600 w/ 128 mg DDR
Sony:
Intel Pentium M 730 processor
15.4" WXGA with xbrite
512 mb pc-2700 333 mhz ddr
80 gb hdd
dvd + r double layer/dvd +/- rw drive
intel 915gm integrated graphics
Built in wireless 802.11 b/g
Now the reason why I want the sony because it's a good looking machine. The Toshiba I want because of the video card, although I hear Sony's video card runs around the same as a 64 mb one. Which one would you suggest??
My nod would go to the Toshiba ... video bein' a major consideration.
Other considerations
(my own point of view, of course - your mileage may vary):
The Toshiba's Wireless a/g is an edge over the Sony's Wireless b/g,
the Toshiba will accept up to 2 Gig of RAM compared to the Sony's 1 Gig max,
the Toshiba's optical drive is more versatile than the Sony's,
the Toshiba has 3 USB 2.0 ports, the Sony has 2,
the Toshiba has a 5-way memory card reader, the Sony just Memory Stick,
the Toshiba comes with much less proprietary bloatware than does the Sony,
and the real kicker: Toshiba comes with a recovery disk, the Sony doesn't.
I didn't look at price, so I dunno how the 2 compare in that regard, but uhless the Sony were significantly cheaper, the Toshiba seems far the better choice, function-wise. Cosmetics don't mean a thing to me, so "prettier" don't even enter the equation.
The toshiba is $2000, the Sony is $2200.
Also, what about battery life?
If the Toshiba is $200 cheaper, I'd say there's no contest - the Toshiba wins. Accordin' to reviews, the battery life seems roughly equivalent - which doesn't mean much; actual battery life is gonna depend on what you do with the machine. Besides, for less than the $200 difference, you can get an external battery - that'd give ya somewhere around 6 to 8 hours of runtime with everything runnin'.
I wish the toshiba could look like the Sony. The sony is sexy =)
Anyone else there have some input?
